WHAT IS EXPOSITORY PREACHING

WHAT IS EXPOSITORY PREACHING

image_thumb[1]

Expository preaching is that mode of Christian preaching that takes as its central purpose the presentation and application of the text of the Bible. All other issues and concerns are subordinated to the central task of presenting the biblical text. As the word of God, the text of Scripture has the right to establish both the substance and the structure of the sermon.

Genuine exposition takes place when the preacher sets forth the meaning and message of the biblical text and makes clear how the word of God establishes the identity and worldview of the church as the people of God. Al Mohler  Steve Lawson

Al Molher said: The only form of authoritative of Christian preaching is expository preaching. According to the Bible exposition is preaching and preaching is exposition. Stop saying I prefer expository preaching or its the best kind of preaching. But what we should do is to explain what it is.

What do we mean when we say we believe in expository preaching? Simply this read the text, explain the test, reproof, correct, exhort, instruct patience teaching directly from text of the scriptures. If you are not doing that you are not preaching.  John MacArthur.

LET US LOOK AT THE TERMS EXPOSITORY AND PREACHING  Steven Lawson

Expository is the adjective and preaching is the noun.

Expository describes  or explains a certain kind of preaching. It is biblical preaching.

The word expository means: Setting forth of the meaning or intent. the presentation of principle things. An explanation. Serving to expound, set forth, explain. Commentary. The art or technique of composing such discourses.

The definition of expository is something intended to explain or describe

It is the kind of preaching that is rooted and grounded in the word of God. And it explains what God means by what God says. It is God centered preaching. It opens up a text of Scripture and the preacher becomes the mouth piece for that text and he does three things.

One: Reads the Text
Two: Explains the Text
Three: Exhorts with the Text
.

Give attention to reading: totally devote yourselves to the

To reading. To exhortation.  To doctrine/teaching.

6.  We are not free to reinvent preaching. We are not free to color outside the lines. This is the only approach to preaching.
7.  Expository is : Biblical Exegetical, doctrinal, theological, profound, conative objective, it is definitive in its presentation of the word.

synonyms serving to explain: it opens up the meaning of the text and shows it relevance’s to t he life of the hearer. And heavy teaching originated  : informative, descriptive, interpretive; elucidative, exegetic, explanative, explanatory, explicative, expositive, hermeneutic, hermeneutical, illustrative, interpretative, interpretive. teaching

8. It is the true Christian preaching.
9. It is explaining the text and giving the God intend meaning of the text and what it requires of us. It opens up the meaning of the text and shows it relevance’s to the live of the listener. It is heavily
teaching orient.

==========================We have to remember that the behavior of those who are not born again of the Spirit and have not received a new nature, will and do and can’t help it, live according to the flesh, the devil and the world. Its possible at any moment of time that what has been restrained can suddenly exposed into a action. cew

There is a major difference in the worship service, experience watching Shadow Mountain Community Church, with David Jeremiah and watching Grace Community Church in Los Angeles, California with John MacArthur. Two totally different styles of worship. One with the great hymns of the faith and one with praise song, One with topic teaching and one with exposition preaching, one with the idea of the TV audience and the other just as it is in the service.

This amazing, arresting, astonishing, astounding, awe-inspiring, awesome, Word of God that we have to preach each week, why would we want to preach from any other book? Today its Romans 12:16.

When was the last time you encouraged your preacher, who is committed to teaching the Word of God diligently each week?

If your pastor is hardworking to preach the whole counsel of God, to let the subject matter and purpose of the text control that of his sermon and to apply the Bible to your life so that you’re walking in the truth, you are blessed.

Reading the LA Times headlines: “Will the Supreme Court recognize modern marriage, or stick with a version that’s now obsolete?” “They will probably settle the issue once and for all by the end of June”. Well, we as Christians live not of this world, we are strangers here. Its getting to be more strange every year. First Peter 2 still holds for us as Christians.

Context and Background:

Serious study of the Bible requires careful analysis of the background and setting of the scripture passage. Failure to do this leads to interpretive garbage and possibly to heresy. Detailed study of the background doesn’t always answer all the questions, but it certainly gets us further along toward correct understanding of both the historical and contemporary meanings of a text. This serious examination of both the historical and literary background of every passage will be presented in summary form with each of the studies
==============================
When the non believers in seeing the lives of godly believers, they want praise the believers, instead, they will have to acknowledge the activity of God in the lives of believers even though they refused to accept it at the time.  In the day of judgment this is how it will be.

Here is the way to spiritual awakening in our world.  This is the only way to spiritual renewal.  Such is the key strategy in evangelistic outreach to the pagan world. Until a significant percentage of Christianity realizes the biblical truth here in First Peter 2, spiritual decline and deterioration will continue to happen in country after contry.  Christianity will continue to shrink and impact ever smaller percentages of the population

Charles e Whisnant or Charles Whisnant quotes of the week

Find a church where the preacher preaches the text in its context. Lives are transformed by pointing the direction of their hearts toward Christ. A do list of behavior doesn’t work. People need an appetite to please the Lord and not themselves. Sunday’s Sermon

.“I have never been as happy as I am now”Bruce Jenner. In his gender reassignment. He needed to hear my sermon from last Sunday on what it means to live happily ever after.

Far too man people try to find happiness in the wrong places. Luke 6 20 to 26 gives us the right places and the right attitude that we need to discover happiness.

I know why the Lord didn’t call me to be an evangelist! How could I preach or teach Romans every night!!! An preacher is an evangelist and an evangelist and missionaries are preachers or teachers. And each have a specific calling to do for the Lord.

I wonder if there is an program for necktie addiction? Of course I have several other addictions as well?

Back in 1978-79 when I was in Connersville, IN and working at Calvary Baptist, and having such a wonderful ministry and we were how shall I say it, “Let Go” from the work. I do believe that Teresa was used by the Lord to encourage us to the point that we did not quit the ministry.

Preachers need preaching as much as doing the preaching. Today its been David Jeremiah at 7 a.m. then Charles Price at 8 a.m. then I preached at 10 am and 11 am came home and listen to John MacArthur and Grace Communication Church worship service at 1:30 to 3:15 pm. Back to church at 5 p.m. teach again at 6:00 pm. come home and at 9 p.m another service with Grace Community Church

Romans 12:15 “Be Happy With those who are Happy and Cry with those Who Cry

Acts15_Head making decisions

THE STANDARD FOR A CHRISTIAN:  LEARNING TO ACT RATHER THAN REACT TO OTHER PEOPLE: ROMANS 12:15
charles e whisnant, pastor/teacher, expositor of the word

The test of genuine change is when our attitudes change. This is especially true when we are treated wrongly and our attitudes reflect the character of Christ. Thus Paul’s first command is not easy, but it is one that we need if we want to be like Christ:

Romans 12:15 Rejoice with those who rejoice and weep  with those who (NASB:

REJOICE WITH THEM THAT DO REJOICE, AND WEEP WITH THEM THAT WEEP KJV

  (Isaiah 66:10-14; Luke 1:58; 15:5-10; Acts 11:23; 1 Corinthians 12:26; 2 Corinthians 2:3; Philippians 2:17,18,28)

And so it is distinctively Christian to rejoice at someone else’s honor, to rejoice at someone else’s joy.  And then he says in verse 15, “Weep with them that weep.”  It is also distinctively Christian to be sympathetic, not indifferent.  The world is becoming more and more callous, more and more indifferent.  By the way, the word “weep” there is an interesting word in the Greek.  It’s the word klaiō, and it means “to shed tears.”  To shed tears – it’s a strong word.  It’s the evidence of the Christian sympathy. MacArthur

BENEFIT OF SYMPATHY… FELLOWSHIP OF JOY,  HUMAN SYMPATHY, THE CHRISTIAN’S JOY AND GRIEF,  THE DEMANDS OF CHRISTIANS, THE CHRISTIAN’S DUTY TO HIS FELLOW MEN.

It seems it is easier to cry with others than to rejoice with others.  Why is that?  Everyone has the same problem!!!  Self.  Self always looks out for self. Self says I am more important and desire more than others.

  1. Many times when some fellow Christians receives a blessing, or reaction is the worst:   And we can pity better than be happy over success.
  2. Its a very exceptional person who genuinely rejoices at another’s success.
  3. Some can show sympathy and happiness and not really feel it themselves.
  4. Paul is saying we must not even feel negatively toward a Christian brother.
  5. Christians are to positivity to “rejoice with those who rejoice.”
  6. The only way Romans 12:9 to 21 can ever be accomplished is by the word of the Holy Spirit.
  7. How does the Holy Spirit do this?  It is called the glory of Christian salvation.
  8. How? The Holy Spirit deals with all that is involved with the self problem by means of the New Birth and the New Nature.
  9. There is a need for some Christians to have a “stint” place in their body so to open up their heart to the Word of God in their lives..
  10. Why are we to rejoice and weep with other brethren?  First Corinthians 12:26, Romans 14:7 and Acts 12:5.  Second Corinthians 11:27-29
  11. There is no greater and complete test of our profession of faith as a Christian than this to fell with other Christians.

Rejoice (5463) (chairo) means to be “cheer” full, calmly happy or well-off. Implies and imparts joy. Chairo is used in a whole range of situations in which the emotion of joy is evoked.

To be in a state of happiness and well being (often independent of what is happening when the Source is the Spirit!). Means to enjoy a state of gladness, to be delighted.

happiest of all devices to perpetuate and extend human enjoyments.

Zodhiates – The word (5485) is related to (5463), to rejoice, and (5479), joy, delight, the result of the activity of the grace of God in man.
Predominant in the usage of rejoice  is the focus on rejoicing over the redemptive deeds of God that come to fruition in the gospel in the person of the Messiah, Jesus Christ. A general feeling of delight and well-being is noted, for example, in Luke 23: 8; John 3:29; Romans 12:15.

Delight in God’s goodness to his people is noted (Acts 11:23; Romans 16:19; 2Corinthian. 7: 7), as is joy in the faithfulness of believers (Colossians. 2: 5; 1Thess. 3: 9; 2John. 1: 4; 3 John . 1: 3).

How did Moses who wrote the book of Genesis find out about Adam and Eve?

How did Moses who wrote the book of Genesis find out about Adam and Eve?
Charles e Whisnant, Pastor/Teacher/ Student of the Word

If Moses was rescued and raised by an Egyptian princess as a baby, how did he learn about the God of Abraham? Do you think he might have been raised to worship Egyptian Gods? Could the OT be a combination of the Hebrew’s God and the Egyptian’s Gods?

What was Moses’ account of creation?
Exodus 24:18; 34:28;  24:26; and 25:40

What happened during Moses’ first 40 days atop Mt. Sinai?

Yahweh Elohiom invited Moses and his minster Joshua.  The 70 elders, Aaron, Nadad and Abihu went up to the plateau to the mount Exodus 24:1-2; 24:9-11

God appeared to these humans in a vision in the angelic or ghostly form of a man. Moses described His form as follows. “And they saw the Elohim (God) of Israel: and there was under his feet as it were a paved work of a sapphire stone, and as it were the body of heaven in his clearness (Ex. 24:10).”

When did Moses see creation?

During this first 40 days and nights that Moses was in the mount (Ex. 24:18), He mentioned the first six days that the cloud covered the mountain

Can You Be A Christian and Not Be A Calvinists?

Someone that’s not a Calvinists but a follower of Christ and will never be a Calvinist, do Calvinists see them as non elect, deceived, blind, foolish, unwise, what’s the label?

calvinism_tulip600

  1. Non Calvinists are simply put, Christians with a lesser Biblical understanding of soteriology (the study of salvation) and a lesser understanding of Theology, and as a result are less adapt to answering questions about the very God they worship, and in some cases are actually PROUD they don’t “know a lot of Theology (the study of God)”
  2. Which, at the end of the day, makes them more likely to convey God incorrectly, as a needy, humanistic, lonely God who wrings his hands hoping SOMEONE will accept His poor Son. Thus, a low Theology is both dangerous, and irresponsible
  3. You can not be born again believer in the Lord Jesus Christ without the principles of the doctrine of Grace or as some call Calvinism. But few fully understand the doctrine enough to understand it who are Christians
  4. When I became saved, at seven I had never heard of John Calvin.  I grew up as a teenager and never heard of John Calvin.  I was certainly born again.
  5. Just because you don’t understand theology doesn’t mean you can not be saved.
  6. The problem is when the Gospel is not presented in the right biblical light.

“An Open Letter to Lifeway and Other Sellers, Buyers, and Marketers of Heaven Tourism, by the Boy Who Did Not Come Back From Heaven.”

Please forgive the brevity, but because of my limitations I have to keep this short.

I did not die. I did not go to Heaven.

I said I went to heaven because I thought it would get me attention. When I made the claims that I did, I had never read the Bible. People have profited from lies, and continue to. They should read the Bible, which is enough. The Bible is the only source of truth. Anything written by man cannot be infallible.

It is only through repentance of your sins and a belief in Jesus as the Son of God, who died for your sins (even though he committed none of his own) so that you can be forgiven may you learn of Heaven outside of what is written in the Bible…not by reading a work of man. I want the whole world to know that the Bible is sufficient. Those who market these materials must be called to repent and hold the Bible as enough.

In Christ,

Alex Malarkey.”

We Are In A Fleshly War Against Our Soul

THE FIRST EPISTLE OF PETER 2:11-12
RIGHT LIVING: THE BETTER WAY OF EVANGELISM
A FIGHT FOR LIFE
January 14, 2014   Pastor/Teacher Charles e Whisnant

llFirst Peter 2 11 and 12 verses
1Peter 2:11  Beloved, I urge you as aliens and strangers to abstain from fleshly lusts which wage war against the soul.  (NASB:

Dearly beloved, i beseech 3870 you as strangers3941 and pilgrims 3927 abstain 567 from fleshy lust 1939, which war again the soul”5590

Right Living: Best Method of Evangelism:  2:11-12

1B    General Principles: 2:11-12
1C    Abstain from following fleslhly passions: 2:11
2C    Maintain good conduct among the unsaved: 2:12

How are we to bring about evangelism:

1B    The discipline of our inward and private life: 2:11

How To Define Fleshly Lust:

Abstain (568) (apechomai or apecho from apó = away from – the idea of putting some distance between, marker of dissociation, implying a rupture from a former association + écho = have) means to be away or be at a distance.

1Peter 4:2  Luke 21:34; Acts 15:20,29; Romans 8:13- Ro 13:13-14; 2Corinthians 7:1; Galatians 5:16-21; 2Timothy 2:22 ; 1John 2:15, 16, 17)

Peter calls for the believer to hold himself away from contact or influence of the strong desires that originate from our utterly depraved nature inherited from Adam and still latent even in those who have been born again.

If the selfish affections are allowed to act without restraint, they acquire a frightful and gigantic development and as we live for ourselves, we become gradually absorbed in our own selfish views and interests.

Gratification:  Romans 8:7; First Timothy 5:6; Galatians 5:24. The fastest road to defeat is the this road.

We cannot pamper our appetites, the objects they delight in

Fleshly (4559) (Sarkikos from sarx = flesh)  refers to that which pertains to the flesh, in context the depraved nature inherited from Adam. It means having the nature of flesh, i.e., sensual, controlled by animal appetites (inherited from Adam), instead of by the Spirit of God.  Romans 8:12, Galatians 5:17

Lusts (1939) (epithumia from epi = at, toward {the preposition “epi-” in the compound is directive conveying the picture of “having one’s passion toward”} + thumos = passion. Root verb epithumeo = set heart upon)  is a neutral term denoting the presence of strong desires or impulses, longings or passionate craving (whether it is good or evil is determined by the context) directed toward an object

Other descriptions besides those already mentioned are: “of the mind,” Ephesians 2:3  “evil (desire),” Colossians 3:5; “the passion of,” 1Thessalonians 4:5 , RV; “foolish and hurtful,” 1Timothy 6:9; “youthful,” 2Timothy 2:22  “divers,” 2Timothy 3:6 ; Titus 3:3 ; “their own,” 2 Timothy 4:3 ; 2 Peter 3:3 ; Jude 1:16; “worldly,” Titus 2:12 ; “his own,” James 1:14 ; “your former,” 1Peter 1:14 , RV; “fleshly,” 1Peter 2:11  “of men,” 1Peter 4:2  ; “of defilement,” 2Peter 2:10 ; “of the eyes,” 1John 2:16; of the world (“thereof”), 1John 2:17; “their own ungodly,” Jude 1:18. In Revelation 18:14] “(the fruits) which thy soul lusted after” is, lit., “of thy soul’s lust.”  (Vine, W E: Vine’s Complete Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words. 1996. Nelson)

Wage war (4754) (strateuomai from strategos = army, stratos = an encamped army) means literally to perform military service, serve as a soldier in the army, go to fight,  carry on a military campaign, make a military expedition, lead soldiers to war or to battle.

(Romans 7:23; 8:13; Galatians 5:17,24; 1Timothy 6:9,10; James 4:1)

Against (2596) (kata) generally describes a downward movement and when used as a hostile sense as in this verse conveys the idea of “against”.

Soul (5590) (psuche or psyche from psucho = to breathe, blow, English = psychology, “study of the soul”)

is  the breath, then that which breathes, the individual, animated creature. However the discerning reader must understand that psuche is one of those Greek words that can have several meanings, the exact nuance being determined by the context.

A FIGHT FOR LIFE:  The flesh aims to damn the soul.  When you have a taste of bigger things, you begin the fall. You give up the flowers for greed you are going to lose.   Essessive indulgence in any appetite injures the body. They destroy the outer life as well as the inward soul. They will attack and conquer it and lead it into captivity. Remember Samson!

If you allow the war to break out on the inside that are wrong, they will wage a war like you wouldn’t believe to destroy you. Sinful lust of unbelief, Impatience, Hardness of heart. Hypocrisy.  Rebellion against that which is good. Weariness in well doing. Pride. Anger. Envy.  Self-Love.  Covetousness. Uncleanness. Uncharitablenss.
