REVIEW WHAT WE ARE LOOKING AT IN Romans 9-10

Why with all the advantages that Israel had why did they still not believe in Jesus Christ, but had just a zeal God.?  Why with all their knowledge about God  that they failed to grasp the real truth about salvation and the law and righteousness and holiness and Jesus Christ.? They just could not believe and the question is why?
Now in talking about their unbelief in chapter 9 he emphasized the fact that they were unbelieving because of the sovereign elective choice of God. In other words, God didn’t choose them all. And so the issue of chapter 9 is an issue of election. It is an issue of sovereign choice.

But the issue of chapter 10 is an issue of unbelief. And I want you never to forget that you always have both of those things. If you have salvation, you have the sovereign election of God and you have the faith of an individual.

If you have the loss of…the lack of salvation, the loss of hope in Christ, it is because you have sovereign choice, that’s chapter 9, and because you have unbelief.

You could think of it along the line of concurrence which is a word that you may have heard used. It’s sort of like an airplane taking off, two things are necessary for an airplane to take off…thrust and lift. If you have lift without thrust, you don’t get off. If you have thrust without lift, you don’t get off. You have to have thrust with lift.

The same thing is true and it’s a weak illustration if you push it too far, but both things must occur simultaneously in concurrence, the election of God and the belief of an individual. Or the rejection of God and the unbelief. And that’s why Paul brings chapter 10 in to show the balance, lest we think that God made choices independent of the choices that men made. So Paul wants to demonstrate then the willful unbelief, the willful ignorance of Israel.

In chapter 9 we were introduced to the unbelief of Israel.  Because here’s Paul presenting the doctrine of justification by grace through faith in Christ, person and work. And as he presents that people are going to say, well if it’s so true and if it’s from God why didn’t the Jews, God’s people, believe it? And so he has to answer that and that’s why he writes 9, 10 and 11, to show how it is that the Jews have rejected.

Bible open

FOR I TESTIFY(3140) ABOUT THEM THAT THEY HAVE A ZEAL (2205) (heat ardor passion) FOR GOD  “For I bear them record”(3140)

(2Corinthians 8:3; Galatians 4:15; Colossians 4:13) (2Kings 10:16; John 16:2; Acts 21:20,28; 22:3,22; 26:9,10; Galatians 1:14; 4:17,18; Philippians 3:6)

BUT NOT IN ACCORDANCE WITH KNOWLEDGE: (1922)
(Ro 9:3; 9:31,32; Psalms 14:4; Proverbs 19:2; Isaiah 27:1; 2Corinthians 4:4,6; Philippians 1:9)

Jesus Christ came into the world, as I pointed out in the beginning, to reveal truth. But Israel was ignorant of that truth. Now Israel’s ignorance becomes the theme of this chapter. And that little phrase at the end of verse 2, “Not according to knowledge,” that little phrase at the beginning of verse 3, “They being ignorant,” indicate to us the theme of what Paul’s going to talk about.
Israel was called “the God-intoxicated people.” John 2:17 and Acts 21:20 and 22:3  Saul was filled up with his zeal for God and Judaism, he really believed he had a handle on the knowledge of God. But he soon was to find out he was wrong.

Yes he had a zeal, but when zeal is misinformed, and misdirected and its a dangerous thing.  As we said last time, they had a head knowledge, superficial knowledge. They had information but not the right kind of knowledge, a deep true knowledge.  They had a “puff up knowledge” 1 Corinthians 8:1 kind of knowledge.  They had a lot of data in their head about the Law, But they did not have the knowledge that would bring them to salvation

BUT…..they  had not properly interpreted the purpose of the Law. We will see I hope that they ignored the sinfulness of their hearts.
Romans 10:3

FOR THEY BEING IGNORANT (50) OF GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS (1343), AND GOING ABOUT TO (2212) ESTABLISH (2476) THEIR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS, HAVE NOT(3756) SUBMITTED THEMSELVES(5293) UNTO THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD”

1363819273538

SO WHY WERE THEY IGNORANT? What was the reasons why they did not belief the message of Paul and really the message through out the Old Testament?

John Mac gives five reasons and we will look that them.

REASON WHY THE JEWS DID NOT ACCEPT THE PREACHING OF PAUL? WHY WAS ISRAEL LOST? UNBELIEF.

Just a footnote here:  “Man is lost because of unbelief not because God made some law that is totally unrelated to how that man is chosen in Christ!”

  1. THEY WERE IGNORANT OF THE PERSON AND CHARACTER OF GOD:
  2. THEY DID NOT GRASP THE PROVISION THAT CHRIST HAD MADE FOR SALVATION
  3. THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND  THE PLACE THAT  FAITH HAD A PART IN BUT ONLY THE LAW
  4. THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND THE PERIMETERS (THE BOUNDARY OR THE LENGTH) THE EXTENT  OF SALVATION:
  5. THEY COULDN’T GET THE PREDICTIONS OF THE WORD OF GOD.

Person of God, Provision of Christ, Place of Faith, Perimeters of salvation and Predictions of Scripture.

NUMBER #1  “THEY WERE IGNORANT OF GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS.” Romans 10:3a
Point to the text…. stay in the text, explain the text, give an understanding of the text.

Use scripture to interpret the text: @ 2 Corinthians 5:21

Paul said “FOR.”  The “root cause” for the failure of the Gospel among the Jews – it was their ignorance of the righteousness of God and their substitution of man’s righteousness.

THEY BEING IGNORANT (not knowing) (50) OF GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS (1343)

They didn’t know what God is like, they didn’t get that God was big on righteousness. Jeremiah 9:24

They didn’t know just how righteous God is.  They did not know just how holy God was and is:

  • Psalms 145:17, Revelation 15:4; Exodus 15:11 and 2 Chronicles 20:21 and Psalms 30:4:  Psalms 103:1, 22:3; 99:5; 47:8

GOD’S RIGHTEOUSNESS (1343)

It refers to a state that conforms to an authoritative standard or norm and so is in keeping with what God is in His holy character. Righteousness is a moral concept. God’s character is the definition and source of all righteousness. God is totally righteous because He is totally as He should be. The righteousness of human beings is defined in terms of God’s. Righteousness in Biblical terms describes the righteousness acceptable to God and thus which is in keeping with what God is in His holy character. Rightness means to be as something or someone should be.

AND SEEKING (2212)  (going about)TO ESTABLISH THEIR OWN: Romans 9:31,32; Isaiah 57:12; 64:6; Luke 10:29; 16:15; 18:9, 10, 11, 12; Galatians 5:3,4; Philippians 3:9; Revelation 3:17,18)

Romans 9 Faith

THEY DID NOT SUBJECT THEMSELVES TO THE RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD:(Job 33:27; Lamentations 3:22; Luke 15:17, 18, 19, 20, 21)

What they didn’t see in God’s holiness, that God had a hatred for sin. His holiness is seen as righteousness

  • Psalms 11:7; 71:19; 48:10 and 119:14

And we don’t see or understand just how holy and righteous God is either. We say “God likes me any way I am.”  Which proves we don’t understand God’s standard of holiness. They have not read Psalms 50:21 either. You should read it.   Most people just want to believe that God is not going to be hard on them because of their sinfulness, which they really don’t see as so bad anyway.

Most people just want to believe in a God who will tolerate our SIN. And that is Sin in itself and will get you in to Hell rather fast.

The World’s religion study will show that the god’s they invent are like men.

But God of the Bible is not like the gods of religions of the world.
Psalms 5:5; 7:11

Most people live like they want to, and believe it will be alright with God in the end. Ignorance I would say:  God is total holy and righteous and hates sin and you will not be alright with that position

Where did the Jews ever get it that God was easy on sinful moral behavior? I don’t find that in the Old Testament.  What I see is that God acted rather fast or dealt rather sever with judgment on those that sin against Him.

I do believe there were those who did see the holiness and righteousness of God. Isaiah, and even old  Peter too.

A failure to understand the holiness of God and Jesus Christ and you just believe God is going to say you are okay with the way you are and you have no fear of God, you are not terrified that you might be wrong and sinful, then you are just like the Jews
A failure to do biblical exposition makes the congregation: if they fail to do biblical exposition to teach the full counsel of God as revealed in holy Scripture it eliminates the truths, the trouble and offended and terrified the lost and the sinful

WE MUST GET A VISION OF GOD FOLKS. DO YOU KNOW GOD REALLY? JUST HOW DO YOU BELIEVE YOU ARE GOING TO GET TO HEAVEN?

So unless you understand the holiness of God and His righteousness you are in a lot of real trouble.
