Put On An Apron of Humility

First Peter 5:5  “Put On The Apron of Humility”

First Peter 5 5 humility

AND ALL OF YOU CLOTHE YOURSELVES WITH HUMILITY TOWARD ONE ANOTHER:

Several good translations of the verse:

Amplified: Likewise, you who are younger and of lesser rank, be subject to the elders (the ministers and spiritual guides of the church)—[giving them due respect and yielding to their counsel]. Clothe (apron) yourselves, all of you, with humility [as the garb of a servant, so that its covering cannot possibly be stripped from you, with freedom from pride and arrogance] toward one another. For God sets Himself against the proud (the insolent, the overbearing, the disdainful, the presumptuous, the boastful)—[and He opposes, frustrates, and defeats them], but gives grace (favor, blessing) to the humble.

KJV: Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.

NLT: You younger men, accept the authority of the elders. And all of you, serve each other in humility, for “God sets himself against the proud, but he shows favor to the humble.”

Phillips: You younger members must also submit to the elders. Indeed all of you should defer to one another and wear the “overall” of humility in serving each other. ‘God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble’.

Wuest: Likewise, younger ones, be in subjection to the elders. Moreover, all of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because God opposes himself to those who set themselves above others, but gives grace to those who are lowly.

Young’s Literal: In like manner, ye younger, be subject to elders, and all to one another subjecting yourselves; with humble-mindedness clothe yourselves, because God the proud doth resist, but to the humble He doth give grace;

AND ALL OF YOU CLOTHE YOURSELVES WITH HUMILITY TOWARD ONE ANOTHER:

  1. (1Peter 4:1,5;  Therefore, since Christ has 1suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same purpose, because he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, but they will give account to Him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.
  2. Romans 12:10Be devoted to one another in brotherly love; give preference to one another in honor;
  3. Ephesians 5:21;  and be subject to one another in the fear of Christ.
  4. Philippians 2:3 Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;
  5. 1Peter 3:3,4; Your adornment must not be merely external—braiding the hair, and wearing gold jewelry, or putting on dresses; but let it be the hidden person of the heart, with the imperishable quality of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is precious in the sight of God.
  6. 2Chr 6:41; 41 “Now therefore arise, O Lord God, to Your resting place, You and the ark of Your might; let Your priests, O Lord God, be clothed with salvation and let Your godly ones rejoice in what is good.
  7. Job 29:14; “I put on righteousness, and it clothed me; My justice was like a robe and a turban.
  8. Psalms 132:9,16; Let Your priests be clothed with righteousness, And let Your godly ones sing for joy.
  9. Isaiah 61:10; I will rejoice greatly in the Lord, My soul will exult in my God; For He has clothed me with garments of salvation, He has wrapped me with a robe of righteousness, As a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, And as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.
  10. Ro mans13:14; But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh in regard to its lusts.
  11. Col 3:12 So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience

Clothe yourself (1463)

an apron a servant wears while working  gather or tie in a knot, hence to fasten a garment, to clothe) (found only here in the NT) literally means to tie something on oneself with a knot or a bow and was a term often used to describe a slave putting an apron over his clothes in order to keep his clothes clean.

This verb also refers to the white scarf or apron of slaves, which was fastened to the belt of the vest and distinguished slaves from freemen, hence the idea is “gird yourselves with humility as your servile garb”.

Peter uses the aorist imperative which signifies a command calling for “soldier like” obedience.  Calls for a specific, definite, decisive choice.  “Do this now, at once “

This is a vitally important command that dare not be dismissed without significant consequences (e.g., pride blunts the Spirit fed stream of God’s amazing grace  as in James 4:6 But He gives a greater grace. Therefore it says, “God is opposed to the proud, but gives grace to the humble.”

And  which is necessary not just for salvation the first time as in Ephesians 2:8-9, but is also necessary for “salvation” daily = sanctification, present tense salvation

In addition them its in the middle voice:  which  indicates we are to initiate the action and participate in the results or effect of this action.

This phrase can be translated “Put on the apron of humility”  which is an appropriated paraphrase picturing the scarf or apron as the badge of a servant.

How easily the world’s competitive spirit filters into the hearts of Christians and Christian workers who become envious of one another’s success. How seldom we think of ourselves as servants for Christ’s sake

Its a problem in the local church that far too many Christians do not have this attitude of humility toward one another.

The Christian believer is as one put it “tie yourself up in humility”  gathering it around us like a coat to shut out the blighting winds of pride.”   What this phrase is saying:  “it is performing selflessly an task God assigns, and bringing forth spiritual fruit.”

Vincent’s Word Study puts it this way: “Put on and wrap yourselves about with humility, so that the covering of humility cannot possibly be stripped from you.”

Remember as Jesus laid aside His outer garments and put on a towel to become a servant, so each of us should have a servant’s attitude and minister to each other.

Humility is not demeaning ourselves and thinking poorly of ourselves. It is simply not thinking of ourselves at all!

The idea is putting on as it were a coat of humility, and showing a yielding to another, in that you show support for the other person in their work for the Lord in the church.

Too many Christians want to think of themselves higher than others,  but here Peter is saying just lie low,  be humble.  We are to think of ourselves in an attitude of humility, it is the quality of unpretentious behavior, a modest estimation of one’s abilities, without arrogance,  even in our own mind we think modesty.

Here is the right attitude:  Humility:

Inasmuch as we are small compared to God, this is the correct estimate of ourselves. The word indicates the esteeming one’s self as small or recognizing one’s insufficiency but at the same time recognizing the powerful sufficiency of God!

  1. Acts 20:19; serving the Lord with all humility and with tears and with trials which came upon me 1through the plots of the Jews;
  2. Eph 4:2; with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another  in love,
  3. Phil 2:3; Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves;
  4. Col 2:18, 23; Let no one keep defrauding you of your prize by delighting in self-abasement and the worship of the angels, taking his stand on visions he has seen, inflated without cause by his fleshly mind, These are matters which have, to be sure, the appearance of wisdom in self-made religion and self-abasement and severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against fleshly indulgence.

Vine’s (which I have used back in First Baptist Church, Altoona, Kansas) says:

that Humility” indicates, not a merely moral quality, but the subjection of self under the authority of, and in response to, the love of the Lord Jesus, and the power of the Holy Spirit to conform the believer to the character of Christ. In contrast to the world’s idea of being “poor-spirited” the Lord commends “the poor in spirit” Matthew 5:3

Humility was not thought of very highly in the ancient world (pun intended) and in fact was even considered to be a vice by the pagan moralists. Christ and Christianity elevated humility to the supreme virtue – the antidote for the self-love that poisons relationships.

Humility is not thinking poorly of oneself. Rather, it is having the proper estimate of oneself in the will of God. The person with humility thinks of others first and not of himself.

Humility, when it becomes self-conscious, ceases to have any value.

Jesus modeled the essence of humility which is being able to put others’ needs and desires ahead of one’s own Philippians 2:3-4).

The principle of submission in presented in many different ways in the New Testament.

image_thumb.png

  1. – Jesus submitted to His parents (Luke 2:51).
  2. – Demons submitted to the disciples (Luke 10:17).
  3. – Citizens should submit to government authority (Romans 13:1 and 5, Titus 3:1, 1 Peter 2:13).
  4. – The universe will submit to Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:27 and Ephesians 1:22).
  5. – Unseen spiritual beings submit to Jesus (1 Peter 3:22).
  6. – Christians should submit to their church leaders (1 Corinthians 16:15-16 and 1 Peter 5:5).
  7. – Wives should submit to husbands (Colossians 3:18, Titus 2:5, 1 Peter 3:5, and Ephesians 5:22-24).
  8. – The church should submit to Jesus (Ephesians 5:24).
  9. – Servants should submit to masters (Titus 2:9 and 1 Peter 2:18).
  10. – Christians should submit to God (Hebrews 12:9 and James 4:7).

.”Submission involves at least four things.

  1. First, it begins with an attitude of entrusting oneself to God The focus of our life must be on Jesus Christ.
  2. Second, submission requires respectful behavior (1Pe 3:1,2). Nagging is not respectful behavior.
  3. Third, submission involves the development of a godly character (1Pe 3:3-5
  4. Fourth, submission includes doing what is right (1Pe 3:6). It does not include violating other Scriptural principles. Submission is imperative for oneness in marriage. (Expository Notes)

Good Citizens First Peter 2:13

GOOD CITIZENS: BEST METHOD OF EVANGELISM

FEBRUARY 06 2015 SERIES FIRST PETER 2:13

Charles e Whisnant, Pastor/Teacher/Expositor of the Scripture’

1A LIVING AS CITIZEN: Be subject to government authorities: for the Lord’s sake:

1B We are to live in such a way as to stop the mouths of those who criticizes us.
2B The greatest believability of the Gospel is the transformation that has occurred in your life.

2A HOW ARE WE GOING TO DO THAT

1B See yourselves as sojourners and pilgrims: 11-12
2B See yourselves as citizens: 13-17
3B See yourselves as servants (Slaves): 18-20

The balance between a life of God (1) to lived on a supernatural plane and (2) living in an earthy house.
We are not to be indifferent to the people around us. vs. 13-14 is the key: Be Good Citizens.

3A SUBMIT YOURSELVES

Jeremiah 29:7; Matthew 22:21; Mark 12:17; Luke 20:25; Romans 13:1-7; Ephesians 5:21; 1Timothy 2:1,2; Titus 3:1; 2Peter 2:10; Jude 8-10)

In Peter’s day, the king was a poor creature, and something worse than that. Indeed, I might say of the bulk of the Emperors of Rome, who were the chief “kings” of that day, that they were monsters of iniquity; yet the office was to be respected even when the man who occupied it could not be much more should it be respected when the occupant is what a true “king” should be.

Spurgeon comments…We are to obey kings, and governors, and magistrates, even when they may not be all that we wish them to be

True Christians give no trouble in the State they are not law-breakers, but they strive to do that which is honest and upright. Where the laws are not righteous, they may cause trouble to bad law-givers and lawmakers; but when rulers ordain that which is just and righteous, they find that Christians are their best subjects.

Put yourselves in that attitude of submission. As Christians we are to be answerable to human institution. We are to be subject too. Proverbs 24:21-22; Jeremiah 29:4-7, 8-16

While you are in a hostile environment, still seek peace in that city.l

The key as citizens: Built a house, eat the fruit of the land, marry your children to others, and do everything to seek the best for your town.

4A PROTEST AND CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE IS NOT BIBLICAL
Romans 13:1-2 (Which I will be in soon) Matthew 22:21

(Remember the All Day Minister Seminar with Bill Gothard on this subject) Also John MacArthur’s “Why Government Can’t Save You.,”

5A TO EVERY ORDINANCE OF MAN

God has establish such patterns of authority for the orderly functioning of human life, and it both pleases and honor Him when we subject ourselves to them.

6A SO WHAT IS THE MOTIVE FOR DOING THIS?

1B Vs. 13 ‘FOR THE LORD’S SAKE.”
2B Why are we doing this? To imitate and glorify God.

God demands it. Jeremiah 24:4-7; There is no power other than God’s.

We do this to imitate the Lord I Peter 2:21-23

We do this to glorify Him, We want to be the source of virtuous, gracious, peace making people. Angry Christians give a bad light to the world. Romans 13:5 Acts 5 and First Corinthians 10:3-5

What about abortion? What about police authority? what about protect what the government is doing, and doing it on Facebook or Twitter? I will get into this in depth when in Romans 13.

1 Peter 2:13 Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority (NASB: Lockman)
Greek: Hupotagete pase anthropine ktisei dia ton kurion; eite basilei os huperechonti,)

Amplified: Bke submissive to every human institution and authority for the sake of the Lord, whether it be to the emperor as supreme, (Amplified Bible – Lockman)

KJV: Submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake: whether it be to the king, as supreme;

8270 holiness, as set apart for God

Believers are holy, in that they are called to be set apart from the world as God’s own people. Likewise certain days and articles are holy because they are set apart for God alone.

Bibical Counseling For Living For God

Romans 11 2 a

Every person has a life to live and that life is to be lived to the glory of God, that was the purpose of our birth. But as we know man live like they did in the book of Judges: “every man did that which was right in their own life.”

One of the greatest ways to learning how to live the Christian life, is to learn to apply the truths that are found in the Word of God.  And if you are not a Christians then that mean you need to know the Savior.

Life is full of challenging events, daily we have to made decisions that require thinking right, and applying right actions and have the right attitudes. We live every day of our lives having to made choices just how are we going to approach the day.First-Peter-1-13-holiness.jpg

Most events in our lives are unsuspected to us, they happen so fast and they often throw us off our game of life.

I heard Charles T. Jones say back in 1978

“You are what you have been becoming in the last five years. What you read and who you are around will give you an idea of what kind of person you are going to be and are today.”

You are today what you have become by what you have been doing the last few years of your life. Sometimes we are what we have been in our whole lifetime. You just didn’t arrive at what you are over night.  Life is a process of growing and learning and living, and studying. Learning how to think, how to belief right, and gaining a greater understanding of the truths that we find in the Word of God.  Praying and seeking God’s purpose and will for our lives is a keep for right living.

I have been preaching from First Peter chapter one for the last few months, and its the best biblical counseling that any one could every give anybody.  image.png

Living Before God Our Father13 Therefore gird up the loins of your mind, be sober, and rest your hope fully upon the grace that is to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ; 14 as obedient children, not conforming yourselves to the former lusts, as in your ignorance; 15 but as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16 because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.

13 Therefore, prepare your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace  to be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14 As [n]obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, 15 but  Iike the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”

The preachers responsibility is to teach the word of God, to give its meaning, to help  the people to understanding the text so that they can apply the truth into their daily lives. We are not only to hear the word by to apply the word.

The Purpose of Salvation, The Result of Sin

The FIRST EPISTLE OF PETER CHAPTER ONE VERSES FOURTEEN TO SIXTEEN

SAVLVATION PRODUCES HOLINESS

PASTOR/TEACHER CHARLES e. WHISNANT

THE PURPOSE OF SALVATION IS THAT SALVATION WILL PRODUCE HOLINESS IN US

100_2517

1A WHAT IS SALVATION:

1B Salvation means being rescued from jeopardy and misery, so that one is now safe. Exodus 52:2; Jonah 2:9 and Psalms 116:6

2B Salvation from sin and its consequences.

3B Salvation has three tenses

1C from sin’s guilt (the past aspect, exposure to penalty is gone)

2C from its power (the present aspect: sin no longer rules us

3C from its presence (the future aspect: sin will one day be no more than a bad memory.)

4B Christians have been saved from:

1C from the wrath of God (Romans 5:9; 1 Thess. 1:10

2C from eternal death: Romans 6:21 and 23

3C from the dominion of sin: Romans 6:14, 18

4C from the life of fear: Romans 8:15

5C from controlling habits of ungodliness and immorality: Titus 2:12

Christians will one day be fully conformed to Jesus in body and moral character: Philippians 3:20 and I John 3:2.

5B While we live in joyful favor with God, we serve out of a gratitude of worship, there is this indwelling sin. But through the energy of the Holy Spirit we gain victory: Romans 5:12; 12:1; 8:14; Galatians 5:16. Romans 7:24 and 8:23.

6B The Desire For Holiness:

For the moment the ability for holiness exceeds our ability. God’s does give us salvation, and we are into our salvation, but salvation is not yet fully into us. We have a taste, but the full effect is yet future.

7B Salvation Gives Us The Following

1C Forgiveness, justification, reconciliation, pardon, acceptance, standing, fellowship. John 5:24 and Romans 8:32-39.

2C Salvation also put us in Christ: called “union with Christ.”. Romans 5:12-19  Ephesians 4:20-24 and Colossians 1:27; 5:4.

3C Our life as a moral person is super naturalized by the Holy Spirit which makes the presence of Christ “to us”, and reproduces in us the what God’s gives us:

1D The desires, aims, attitudes, and behavior patterns that we see in Jesus Christ.

2A THE PURPOSE OF OUR SALVATION: BECAUSE OF SIN

1B The question is why do we need salvation: Note: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vbydx95tVQhttp://cwhisna.blogspot.com/ Martyn Lloyd Jones gives a great reason why we need salvation.

2B The Definition of Sin

1C Any want of conformity unto, or transgression of, the law of God.

2C It is an energy, an obsession, an allergic reaction to God’s law, an irrational anti-God syndrome.

3C Our very nature is driven toward self-gratification.

4C Here is sin in action: it is nonconformity to God in several ways:

     1D rebellion against God.

2D transgression of the bounds God’s sets for us.

3D missing the mark God has told us to aim at.

4D defiling oneself in the sight of God

5C Sin: The mind of sinful man is death. its hostile to God, It do not submit to God’s law, nor can the mind do so. Romans 8:6-8.

3B The Bible is like a mirror for self-knowledge, that is the Bible shows us ourselves as we are.

4B “No smokescreen of religiosity can save us from sin.”

5B Do all people know that they are sinners? Yes and No. All people know where are not they obey God or reject His ways. And as result they don’t believe they are sinners. All people have a certain amount of knowledge of God, thus they are without excuse: Romans 1:18-32.
