FEBRUARY 06 2015 SERIES FIRST PETER 2:13
Charles e Whisnant, Pastor/Teacher/Expositor of the Scripture’
1A LIVING AS CITIZEN: Be subject to government authorities: for the Lord’s sake:
1B We are to live in such a way as to stop the mouths of those who criticizes us.
2B The greatest believability of the Gospel is the transformation that has occurred in your life.
2A HOW ARE WE GOING TO DO THAT
1B See yourselves as sojourners and pilgrims: 11-12
2B See yourselves as citizens: 13-17
3B See yourselves as servants (Slaves): 18-20
The balance between a life of God (1) to lived on a supernatural plane and (2) living in an earthy house.
We are not to be indifferent to the people around us. vs. 13-14 is the key: Be Good Citizens.
3A SUBMIT YOURSELVES
Jeremiah 29:7; Matthew 22:21; Mark 12:17; Luke 20:25; Romans 13:1-7; Ephesians 5:21; 1Timothy 2:1,2; Titus 3:1; 2Peter 2:10; Jude 8-10)
In Peter’s day, the king was a poor creature, and something worse than that. Indeed, I might say of the bulk of the Emperors of Rome, who were the chief “kings” of that day, that they were monsters of iniquity; yet the office was to be respected even when the man who occupied it could not be much more should it be respected when the occupant is what a true “king” should be.
Spurgeon comments…We are to obey kings, and governors, and magistrates, even when they may not be all that we wish them to be
True Christians give no trouble in the State they are not law-breakers, but they strive to do that which is honest and upright. Where the laws are not righteous, they may cause trouble to bad law-givers and lawmakers; but when rulers ordain that which is just and righteous, they find that Christians are their best subjects.
Put yourselves in that attitude of submission. As Christians we are to be answerable to human institution. We are to be subject too. Proverbs 24:21-22; Jeremiah 29:4-7, 8-16
While you are in a hostile environment, still seek peace in that city.l
The key as citizens: Built a house, eat the fruit of the land, marry your children to others, and do everything to seek the best for your town.
4A PROTEST AND CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE IS NOT BIBLICAL
Romans 13:1-2 (Which I will be in soon) Matthew 22:21
(Remember the All Day Minister Seminar with Bill Gothard on this subject) Also John MacArthur’s “Why Government Can’t Save You.,”
5A TO EVERY ORDINANCE OF MAN
God has establish such patterns of authority for the orderly functioning of human life, and it both pleases and honor Him when we subject ourselves to them.
6A SO WHAT IS THE MOTIVE FOR DOING THIS?
1B Vs. 13 ‘FOR THE LORD’S SAKE.”
2B Why are we doing this? To imitate and glorify God.
God demands it. Jeremiah 24:4-7; There is no power other than God’s.
We do this to imitate the Lord I Peter 2:21-23
We do this to glorify Him, We want to be the source of virtuous, gracious, peace making people. Angry Christians give a bad light to the world. Romans 13:5 Acts 5 and First Corinthians 10:3-5
What about abortion? What about police authority? what about protect what the government is doing, and doing it on Facebook or Twitter? I will get into this in depth when in Romans 13.
