THE ATTENDANCE AND OFFERING CHURCH BOARD

An Ad I saw: # 9780805470543 Register Board Dark Oak With Slides and Numerals Long lasting oak laminated and finished on both sides of 3/4′ chipboard. The routed cross at top is painted in gold gilding. For use with Sunday School and Discipleship Training. Each board is 18″ x 28″ and comes with the following slides (10″ x 2 7/8″) and numerals (15/8″ x 2 7/8″): Sunday School, Enrollment (2), Attendance Today (2), Attending Worship, Discipleship Training, Attendance Last Sunday, Attendance Year Ago, Record Attendance, Prepared Lesson, Brought Bible, Read Bible Daily, Outreach Contacts, Ministry Contacts, Total Contacts, Building Fund, Offering Today, Offering Last Sunday, Offering Year Ago, Arrows (6), Decimals (6), dollar marks (6), six sets of numerals. $1

On several occasions as a new pastor I have had this problem with the sacred cow worship attendance board.  One of the churches had an enrollment of 404 and attendance today of 44. Really, the truth. Offering. $3.56.   The fact is when you walk into a church you might be visiting, you judge the church by what you see on the attendance board don’t you?

When I suggested that we take the board down, they suggested that I leave the church. Three months later I did just that, left the church.

Some of the sacred cows we have in churches.  Don’t take the coffee in to the sanctuary. But you can take your bad attitude in, or your unforgiven spirit in.

Make sure you have your KJV Bible, but you have not read it in a month. And no one reads the KJV 1611 anyway.

I have had to fight over so many sacred cows in churches.  Of course I have made several myself over the last 40 years too, I am sorry to say.

The Sunday Worship Bulletin. I had one at First Baptist Church in Altoona for 15 years. Now I had a good one too. Generally four pages of good material, not just a bulletin.

Of course there was the children story before church. Thaht got me into trobule.

Then there was the children church.  You know having the babies in the nursery and the preschool kids in a class during service.  I have a problem preaching or teaching when kids and babies are playing and crying.

And I want mention that women had to wear dresses and men had to wear ties. (I still believe they should) Its not a sacred cow.

Biblical worship habits are necessary I know.  But we had so many habits that were not biblical or necessary to say the least.

Preaching the Gospel is a good biblical habit to get into on Sunday. But preaching a salvation message to the same 15 people for 25 years is not.  Preaching on every known sin you can think of in one sermon is not necessary to those same people.

Well enough of this…….

I remember when a new pastor took down the attendance board. Shocker! I’m glad to see many churches becoming a part of the 21st century. We must minister to people in today’s world. “Sacred” stuff from the ’60s :: KJV vs NIV, New Music vs Old Music, even the scheduling of services are being discussed and changed (allbeit kicking and screaming all the way!)

  3. MUSINGS FROM AN OLD GUY. . . . .So, I guess I’m kicking and screaming!!!!! Well, I’m a pastor, aged 64, and have been in a Baptist Church all of my life. I was saved in, baptized in, called to preach in, married in, attended one of our Bible colleges out of, worked in, surrendered for the mission field while working in, started 4 of these as a foreign missionary, and now am starting a new one. . .here in the States. . .a Baptist Church. You may water down the past as far as Church music, Bible versions, and how we reach people and keep them today versus how preachers used to do it back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s. But, “7-11″ praise choruses, weak Bible versions that take some words and verses out of these Bibles versus the KJV, seeker-sensitive Sunday meetings with loud rock and roll music that’s passed off as Christian music, services that are specifically geared to not offend anyone visiting. . . . followed by mamby-pamby preaching that tickles the ears every Sunday and teaches us how to do this or that better or how to relate better with my spouse, my kids, or with my neighbor, instead of preaching the Word with fire and conviction, all of this just doesn’t cut it! I believe if. . . .God’s work is done God’s way. . .led by the Holy Spirit. . . .using the right Bible tool, the version that more people have been saved under in all history, and taking a stand against worldliness and against Church members who see nothing wrong with “playing footsie” with lost people in the sinful practices of our society, then, this is what will have a positive spiritual impact upon what’s wrong in our Churches today. So, go ahead and equate large attendance numbers with spiritual success and then notice the result of what spiritual compromise does to a Church membership when true Holy Spirit conviction and leading is not a major part of your ministry. Church members are like sheep, they go where they’re led. Preachers have listened to certain “pied piper” pastors who have the numbers and CLAIM that God is winning the lost through their magnanimous talents. Yes, they have the numbers! But are the big numbers the “pragmatic” way we should judge our ministries? Our main problem today is with the preachers of America. A good many are in the comfort zone, they want it easy and don’t want to rock the boat. We have to work hard to keep everybody happy, instead of worrying about how to make God happy!!!!! And, in case you haven’t noticed, the famous Rick Warren has been working publicly and privately pushing “Chrislam” as, if I understand his rhetoric, the way we should be ministering our Churches, in order to not offend the Muslims! So. . . .if you want to, go ahead and criticize the KJV and attendance boards, that’s fine. But to me it’s indicative of the true spiritual temperature that possibly exists in your Church (it’s not about numbers or money or how popular we might be). My take on everything there is about Churches is. . . .if it was good once upon a time, it’s still good today. I beleive that we should do is go back. . . to the early days, to the old paths, to the true Gospel, to real preaching against modernism, worldliness, and the need for the lost, in the Church and without, to get saved and help fulfill the Great Commission we were given (I can digress to go into detail why I’m saying what I’m saying, but it might take a book to get it all down!!!).

Look, I don’t know you and you don’t know me. But, you’re my brother in Christ (and I have no reason to believe that you are not!). We may disagree. But, I’ve been around the block a few times and I know from experience what I’ve just shared is what I believe to be true. To you my brother I say, God bless you and I thank God for the good you have accomplished there in your ministry. And even though we’ve never met, I bet we could become good friends if we ever do!
